CHILDREN THEN AND NOW: GENERATIONAL DIFFERENCES

Trẻ em xưa và nay: Khác biệt mang tên thế hệ

The remarkable economic and societal integration and development, coupled with advancements in science and technology, have led to notable differences in the lives of children from past generations and those of today. Despite only a decade or so separating Generation X (born between 1980-1999) and Generation Z (born from 2000 onward), a number of significant changes can be observed when comparing the two.

1. Imprints of the Era

Generation X and Y, or 8X and 9X, were born into a time of transition, adapting to the changing society. They witnessed an improvement in living conditions even though they didn’t experience the full extent of modern comfort and convenience. Importantly, they embodied the harmony of embracing the new while preserving the beauty of their time.

On the other hand, Generation Z, or 10X, was born into an era of flourishing information technology and communication. They inherited the progressive advancements that began with Generation X, as well as new modern innovations. This is a crucial factor distinguishing the two generations, as both have had to adapt to the rapid changes of their times.

2. Differences in Lifestyle

2.1. Education

Children in the past enjoyed a balanced approach between education and play, without feeling overly pressured. They used to carry a few schoolbooks wrapped in newspaper or colorful cardboard to school, dedicating half of their day to studying and the other half to helping their parents with household chores or spending time with friends.

In stark contrast, education today has become an invisible burden that leaves children with little time for recreation and leisure. The excitement and joy of learning have been replaced by fear and stress at the mere mention of going to school.

2.2. Entertainment

In the past, when media and technology were limited, children entertained themselves by socializing and playing traditional games. Games like “ô ăn quan,” “bịt mắt bắt dê,” “cờ gánh,” and “chơi chuyền” were integral activities for Generation 9X after school or on weekends.

Today’s children are exposed to technology at a young age, with the world condensed into a single smartphone or tablet. While it may seem like children are playing alone when they’re on their devices, they can connect with friends worldwide and explore an enormous online library through platforms like Google.

Furthermore, as urbanization and industrialization expand, outdoor play spaces are diminishing. Children in the past could freely enjoy the outdoors and immerse themselves in nature. However, today’s children face environmental pollution and increased social issues when they venture outside. This has led parents to tightly control their children’s activities.

3. Differences in Thinking

Societal development is reflected not only in technological advancements but also in people’s perspectives on life. Children from the past had to confront various difficulties and limitations, fostering independence and a strong work ethic. In contrast, contemporary children are often shielded by their families, which can lead to dependency.

However, modern children are more confident and willing to express themselves compared to their predecessors. The societal norms have become more open and accepting, allowing children to break free from rigid constraints. These changes in thinking somewhat affect how children adapt to and engage with their social environment, as well as how parents nurture and support their development.
