When it comes to emojis, everyone knows what they are, right? But do you know the interesting facts behind these emojis? Let’s find out with OneSpace!
Who is the creator of emojis?
Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita is the person behind the creation of the first set of 176 emojis in 1998. They were designed in a 12×12-pixel grid containing 144 dots.
Why are they called “emojis”?
Contrary to popular belief that “emoji” is derived from the word “emoticon,” it is actually a purely Japanese word. “E” means picture, “mo” means writing, and “ji” means character.
The rise of emojis
Although emojis were introduced in 1998, it wasn’t until 2012 when Apple released iOS 6 that emojis truly exploded in popularity and became widely used worldwide. Emojis became an exciting competition between smartphone companies like Samsung and Apple to offer animated emojis and personalized emojis.
“Emoji” in the Oxford dictionary
After the explosion of emojis with the release of iOS 6.0, in August 2013, the word “emoji” officially made its way into the Oxford dictionary as a common term, alongside other Japanese words like “anime,” “manga,” “sushi,” and “kimono.”
Current number of emojis
The Unicode Consortium, responsible for managing the emoji keyboard, officially increased the total number of emojis to 2,823 symbols in 2018. This update introduced more diverse skin tones, professions, and new gender options. The number of emojis has grown astonishingly from just 722 symbols in 2015.
Most used emoji
The reigning champion of emojis is the “Face with Tears of Joy” emoji. This emoji has been the most widely used across Google, Facebook, and Twitter keyboards for several consecutive years. It even made its way into the Oxford dictionary in 2015.
So, what about Vietnam? Vietnam is one of the countries that uses less commonly known emojis worldwide. The top three most used emojis in Vietnam are: 😎 😄 😛
World Emoji Day
With the current widespread popularity of emojis, there is an entire day dedicated to these expressive symbols worldwide. World Emoji Day is celebrated on July 17th and was initiated in 2014. The date was chosen based on the calendar emoji. On this day, various award ceremonies, voting activities, trends, and emoji-related games are organized on forums and social media platforms, with the participation of users from around the globe.
Emojis truly possess extraordinary power, becoming the fastest-growing language in the world that everyone can learn, understand, and use. Do you want to follow in the footsteps of designer Shigetaka Kurita and invent exciting things for the future?
