1. Electric Bulb
Until the late 19th century, the main sources of illumination in households were oil lamps and candles. After numerous experiments, in January 1879, the great inventor Thomas Edison created the world’s first electric filament light bulb.
The invention of the electric bulb completely revolutionized human life since then, saving significant costs compared to the use of gas lamps for lighting in large spaces as before. Moreover, the filament light bulb provided a stable light source and ensured greater safety compared to candles or oil lamps when used in households. 2. Air Conditioner
Since ancient times, humans had devised various cooling methods to serve daily life. Ancient Egyptians hung wet reed mats on doors and sprayed water, while ancient Romans installed water pipes around their homes. Subsequently, many other cooling inventions were created, such as ice-making machines and refrigerators. However, it wasn’t until 1902 that the first air conditioner was invented.
The father of the first “life-cooling” machine in the world was the scientist Willis Carrier. Surprisingly, Carrier’s original purpose for creating the machine was not for cooling, but to dry ink in printing. Nevertheless, the product later gained global fame for its astonishing cooling ability and improved air quality. Thanks to air conditioners, humans were “rescued” from the sweltering heat of summer, providing a cool, fresh, and stable indoor environment even when the outdoor temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius.
3. Automobile
In 1886, the German scientist Karl Benz produced the world’s first automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, named Motowagen. Motowagen had a speed of 16 km/h, mainly made of steel tubes, a wooden sliding seat, and only three wheels.
After its creation, Motowagen became a “sensation” and quickly replaced traditional horse-drawn carriages, initiating the development of the automotive industry worldwide. Following the Benz Patent Motorwagen, Karl Benz and his team continued to produce professional automobiles, laying the foundation for the creation of the impressive line of Mercedes-Benz luxury cars later on.
4. Vaccine
Nearly three hundred years ago, two British doctors, Thomas Dimsdale and Edward Jenner, had a crazy idea that caused a major change in the medical field. They conducted a highly dangerous experiment by deliberately infecting a healthy person with weakened disease agents to create immunity.
Although this method was considered risky, it represented the pinnacle of medical achievement at the time. When the doctors transferred cowpox pustules from a patient to a healthy individual – for reasons unknown back then – the healthy person developed a milder form of the disease and gained lifelong immunity to it.
5. Airplane
The first powered aircraft was invented by the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright, in 1903. On December 17, 1903, in Kill Devil Hills near the town of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, the Wright brothers’ aircraft made its first historic flight. The flight lasted for 12 seconds and covered about 36.5 meters before landing on the ground.
